FilterAnswerbyAnswer

Hi Tally Team,I am using Tally for market research fieldwork, and I would love to see a feature for dynamic answer filtering (filtering options of a question based on the answers selected in a previous question). Here are two typical use cases that would make Tally much more powerful for complex surveys:Use Case 1: Option Pining / Sub-settingQ1: Has options 1, 2, 3, 4.Q2: Has the exact same options (1, 2, 3, 4).Logic: If a user selects options 1 and 3 in Q1, Q2 should only display options 1 and 3 for selection.Use Case 2: Conditional Option Visibility (Mapping)Q1: Has options 1, 2.Q2: Has options 1, 2, 3, 4.Logic: > * If the user selects 1 in Q1 $\rightarrow$ Q2 shows options 1, 2.If the user selects 2 in Q1 $\rightarrow$ Q2 shows options 3, 4.Currently, the only workaround is duplicating questions and using the Hide blocks logic, which creates cluttered forms and generates multiple columns in data exports (e.g., Google Sheets), making data cleaning very time-consuming.Having the ability to show/hide specific answer choices within the same multiple-choice block would be a game-changer for data collection.Thank you and keep up the great work!

Hi Hoàng, Thanks for sharing this! This can actually already be achieved using conditional logic, even without generating duplicate responses/columns. If you'd like, please send us your form URL at tally.so/support and we can help set it up and show you how to achieve your specific use case.

Hi Tally Team, Thank you for your response, but I would like to clarify my specific use case, as the current "Conditional Logic" or "Answer Piping" features do not fully solve it without creating a messy data structure. I have created a draft survey here to demonstrate the exact limitations: https://tally.so/r/ODkDK8 Here are the two core features I am proposing for Tally: 1. Dynamic Choice Filtering based on Multi-Select (With "Other" text piping) Q1 (Multi-select): "Which soft drink brands do you know?" (Options: Coca, Pepsi, 7up... and an "Other" open text field). Q2 (Multi-select): "Which brands have you used in the past 6 months?" My Goal: Q2 should ONLY display the specific brands that the respondent selected in Q1. Furthermore, if they typed a custom name in the "Other" field of Q1, Q2 should dynamically pull that exact text as a selectable option instead of just showing the word "Other". Current Limitation: Tally cannot dynamically filter the checklist options of Q2 based on Q1's answers in real-time. 2. Cascading Options / Conditional Answer Choices (Instead of duplicating questions) Q3: "Which vehicle do you use most?" (Options: 2-wheel, 4-wheel). Q4a & Q4b: "Which brand?" (Q4a shows Yamaha, Honda... for 2-wheel; Q4b shows Toyota, Mazda... for 4-wheel). My Goal: I want ONLY ONE single question (Q4). If Q3 = 2-wheel, Q4 displays the 2-wheel brand list. If Q3 = 4-wheel, Q4 displays the 4-wheel brand list. Current Limitation: Right now, I have to create two separate, duplicate questions (Q4a and Q4b) and use conditional logic to hide/show them. When exporting to Google Sheets, this creates two separate columns with a lot of blank cells, which messes up my data pipeline for downstream reporting. Having native support for Filtered Options within the same question block based on previous responses would be a massive game-changer for advanced survey designs! Best regards, Hoang Anh
